It Only Takes a Few Minutes to Begin Your Career in Radiology
Radiology Tech Degrees Available
The standard prerequisite for attending a radiology tech college is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor's Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor's Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to finish and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable as well. One thing to bear in mind is that radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in Virginia. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Virginia or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.
Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification
After you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may have to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many approve other options for testing as well. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Virginia employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options in Virginia to become certified. ARRT's certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.
Online X-Ray Technologist Programs
As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still earn your online degree, a significant portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is typically carried out in Virginia family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Virginia residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree often discover that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are often more affordable than conventional options. Along with lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just make sure that the online program you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.
